Minimalist garden, inspired by the Arizona Desert

This one was fun to do. Instead of covering the garden with an abundance of plants, the brief was to keep it simple and understated. The client wanted a low maintenance, minimalist garden without it being boring.

We took our inspiration from Arizona. When most people think desert, they assume brown and orange but if you look closely, deserts are filled with textures and detail. Often cacti’s will have small flowers in season and not to forget the fiery sunsets in pinks and reds.

We used the outline layout that was already there and played around with different heights, shapes and sizes of plants. Getting the right grouping and combination was key.

Once satisfied with the balance, we were able to plant and finish the planters off with small stones as ground cover. The result is a warm and worldly look filled with clean lines, desert-hues, influenced by the simple desert life.

We are happy, but more importantly, so is the client.

“Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
