But before you do, ask yourself what you need to illuminate and why. Do you want to create a festive tone on your patio for the evening or is it a corner or pathway that could be hazardous if it gets dark? Is it for aesthetics, or will the light serve a purpose?

Ensure sufficient lighting along stairways and near steps to allow safe walking while not adding so much light that it looks like a parking bay at a mall. Smaller spotlights or sidelights work well, but these stripped lights underneath the steps are hard to beat.
