The last (for now) in our series on adding colour to your garden. We look at oranges and reds that light up your green space.
Our absolute favourite and one we will feature here is Aloe vera in bloom.
The aloe vera plant is an easy, attractive succulent that enjoys full sun and good drainage.
It is important not to overwater them and make sure you let the water drain away fully – do not let the plant sit in water as this may cause the roots to rot.
The aloe family (Aloe spp.) contains more than 400 species, the most well-known of which is aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), noted for its ability to soothe dry or sunburned skin. Many aloes grow well in rock gardens or arid landscapes in warm climates, and most bloom at least once a year.
Top tip Aloe vera planted in pots:
If you plant them in a pot - a layer of gravel, clay balls, or any other “drainage” material in the bottom of the pot is not necessary, but a good drainage hole is enough. They look great in flower beds as they can grow quite tall, but are equally suited for pots, especially terra-cotta or similarly porous material as it will allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings.
