A peek into Gins' own garden

We share more of Gins’ own garden and a few tips and facts about some of the plants featured.

Shown in the picture is a selection of plants well-suited for the our climate in the UAE. From left to right is 1.Plumeria obtusa 2. Murraya paniculata 3. and a Cycad

1 / Plumeria obtusa, also known as Lei flowers and Frangipani, are mostly smallish shrubs or trees. When watering your Plumeria tree, remember they do not like to get their feet wet. Ensure they are planted in well draining soil. Water them more frequently, especially in summer when the plant holds a lot of foliage and flowers. Not in a hot climate and no leaves on your Plumeria? Plumerias go through dormancy in winter. At that time, like other deciduous plants, it drops its leaves and remaining flowers and appears to stop growing. If this continues when the season changes, chances are they are too cold where they are planted and could do better with a replant somewhere else. Check and get some advice from your local nursery.

2 / Murraya is a hot climate plant and prefers sun. Great for all of us in the UAE. They are easy to care for, fast growing and respond well to pruning, which makes them ideal to grow hedges. They are fairly waterwise but will grow better and flower (soft feathery deep green leaves all year and flower with masses of orange scented blossoms) when watered deeply once two twice a week.

3 / Cycads: They need no introduction. They are versatile to where they are planted, but will need more care when planted in direct and harsh sun. Did you know stem cuttings can be used to start new plants from all cycads? Usually, many plants can be produced from a single stem cutting.

When doing a garden, Gin discusses all options of plant choices with her clients, not only in the look for the layout, but also the long term caring required for the plants. Irrigation solutions are a good way to reduce maintenance and is included in project planning.
